Does anyone know how to set up a counter that would work kind of like
the table counter does?  I want to create a group of items and have the
numbers assigned automatically.

For example, suppose I had 3 items.  I would want them labeled.
Chp#.1, Chp#.2, and Chp#.3.  I then want to use \ref to refer back to
these items.  If you know how to do this, let me know.
