This is strange. I'm quite sure that last week when I posted my
enquiry our 386/ix system didn't output any NUL if I said echo
'a\000b' when logged in on the tty00 port.  Now, after a reboot, I
tried it again, and it works as expected...  and uucp transfers also
work...
