The amplifier was (of course) pretty simplistic and the pickup wasn't much better, but the results were quite good. Apparently the dish was designed well. I replaced the mic and used a real amp, then the results were fairly amazing (interestingly the mic was from R.S., but at least it eas a Shure. The new catalog has a greatly improved version: Bionic Ear (tm) H33,595 $129.00 They claim it can here a whisper at 100 yds., I'm inclined to agree.
