I think belladonna08 is the missing one, and in any case nothing can talk to
it, so xdm on lily08 was pissed off.  I moved the xdm-config file out of
the way - when it returns:
   cd /software/x11/data/xdm
   mv xdm-config.hide-until-belladonna08-returns xdm-config
and start xdm or reboot.
