Does anyone know anything about the planned systems
to 'code' rental video cassettes so that each time
they are rented out, a change will occur that will
enable the production house to track usage and
obtain royalties?

I heard of two such schemes, (one I think was called
'Playcount')

What is happening? and is this a practical concept?
