The kernel switch a la V8 is a good idea and should be simple enough. The code could be duplicate in the few utilities which read raw disks, or 2 versions of these utilities could exist (maybe under /usr/old/bin) and let the user know what he's doing. It would take far fewer man-hours to have 2 way compability than insist all Minix users switch formats [which message did this talk of a new filesystem start in?
