Why not put a copy of spell, write, etc. in the commands source directory as, say, "spell.sh". Then it would be in the source directory, although not as a .c file. The commands makefile could just copy the files to bin and chmod them executable. Bing Bang had that in his serial driver. I think it required multiple video pages and only worked on CGA video boards.
