I'm not sure this is the solution either; Cleanup and Snapshot both require clicking on the drawer or disk icon; it's nice to open a window & immediately be able to clean it up (an option you'll be doing about as often as deleting). THE ANSWER is, of course, that every time you start shift-clicking things, make the first one a regular click. This will deselect anything which happened to have been "left over" selected.
