In reply to mice getting full of crap and needing to be cleaned.....

I got my GS in '86, and a mousepad at the same time.  I've never had to clean
it, and it's always worked flawlessly.

BTW-I do agree optical mice are nice, but the one that came with the machine is
cheaper.
