IBM has (since the early 60's at least) practically donated mainframes to universities on the grounds that industry hires college graduates and those college graduates are likely to be inclined to buy the kind of computer system they are already familiar with (the early "electronic brains" were Univacs, but IBM ended up with 2/3 of the mainframe computer market).
