Several comments:

= In talking about the drives not booting: "nor is it in any way
  associated with stiction".  Then what is the cause and where did
  the stiction go?

= Why was his posting only distributed in the usa?  Won't foreign
  drives get fixed, or do they with their 1 year warranty not need an
  extension (though they never used the word `warranty' in the Apple
  posting--they don't dare, they can't figure out how to wean
  themselves from all that AppleCare cash.).

= Can we trust that Mr. Kateley's posting does reflect official Apple
  policy, and if so, what about his generic disclaimer:

I think we have too much knee-jerk lawyer-fear.

(Disclaimers can be fun.  If written carefully, they can imply all
kinds of things other than what they actually say...)

= Finally, it is about time Apple admitted they have a problem.  Poor
  Quantum stands behind their drives with a real warranty but Apple
  has been standing in the way and giving Quantum a bad name.
