I AM NOT SURE IF YOUR REV OF HPUX DOES THIS, BUT A WAY OF VERIFYING A
1/4 INCH TAPE, NOT FOR CONTENT BUT FOR DATA READABILITY, IS TO LOAD IT INTO THE
TAPE DRIVE AND THEN UNLOADING IT WITH tcio

tcio -ur /dev/tape
 
 NOT RUNNING tcio WITH THE V OPTION FORCES A DATA VERIFY OPERATION
 BEFORE UNLOADING.
