Don't forget that the MIDI spec requires that in/outputs be opto-isolated. There
was a discussion of this, including the hardware (yes, hardware - but slight)
mods needed, in rec.music (.synth?) some months back. (BTW, that would be a
better place to post this sort of stuff than here.)
