Recently I posted quite a number of patches for GNU Make 3.56 all in one
lump.  Having been properly chastised, I repent in dust and patches.  :-)

Seriously, though:  I've split up the big patch into several little ones.
List readers may already have received them by now.  I trust that these
little patches will at least be understandable.
