The creation of 'rn' involved LOTS of time from one individual, with no compensation. Larry Wall created a news reader that was -- and still is, IMHO -- much better than the others available at the time. If you don't like it, don't use it. If you want something "perfect", by your definition, send me your definition and I'll bid it -- my guess is that it shouldn't run over $25,000 (unless you want source, too -- that's negotiable).
