In Toronto, roots country is hip on the Queen Street rock club scene. Our favourite Albertan, k.d. lang came out of that scene, as well as Lori Yates (she records for CBS out of Nashvill now; another country punk sold out, like k.d.). When I was up there at the end of June, street vendors were selling tie-dye shirts to punkers in black leather and frayed denims; the background music blaring away was vintage Johnny Cash. The Toronto music scene is (and has been) very interesting, and is still roundly ignored by the American rock media.
