I realize that most of the replies will concern playing with emacs to do what I want; however, I have no experience binding keys to emacs and no experience with lisp. A plug-'n'-play package for emacs would be dandy -- C source for a standalone editor would be better (in the interest of reducing the relatively high load cost of emacs in limited RAM).
