Zilog, having flubbed the Z280 project for so many years, was mortally embarrassed by Hitachi's excellent 64180 chip (and even more excellent 1-chip version, the 647180). Thus they made a deal to market the 64180 under the pseudonym Z180. The 64180 is far more than a 'Z80 clone'.
