System V has a more fine-grained tty driver so that output/input character handling is decoupled from the interface details (such as #data bits, parity, stop bits, speed etc). Therefore, a System V machine will always transmit 8 bits without resorting to "raw" mode if the interface is set to 8 data bits (w or w/o parity).
