hello Frank,

group 3 fax files are already compressed by both run length and
huffman coding, so unix LZ compression isn't apt to provide much
more compression...

Perhaps it would be reasonable to pre-ftp compress, post-ftp
uncompress these files?  Always send out out compressed files and toss
received files which won't uncompress with a rejection notice.
