Roch. Center for Visual Sci. Lines: 33 I recommend ABZOO. This program encourages preschoolers to write and read by presenting them with pictures of animals with their names at 3 different levels of difficulty. At the lowest level a keyboard is put up on the screen and the child hits any key and an animal whose name starts with that letter is shown, the talker says his name and then the keyboard is presented with that key missing. At the highest level the animal and his name is shown then is blanked and as the child types the name in a portion of the animal is reshown. My kids have gotten much enjoyment from this program and I expect they will for some years to come. I suspect most kids would enjoy it between the ages of 2-6. On the other hand I would avoid the BYTE BY BYTE Programs. They are not good neighbors with other programs you might want to run and we end up having to reboot everytime we use those. The ideas in the BYTE BY BYTE programs seem appealing to us adults but they just havent held my kids attention for so long. They may be aimed at older kids that have learned to use the mouse effectively perhaps. But then I would think that a child that knows how to use a mouse effectively would already be bored with the concepts of square vs circle or small vs bigger or coloring a dinosaur tail red and his head yellow. . will enjoy it f Joanne Albano, Center for Visual Science (716) 275-3055 Room 256 Meliora Hall, Univ. of Rochester, Rochester NY 14627 UUCP: {rutgers,allegra,decvax}!rochester!ur-cvsvax!jea INTERNET: jea@snipe.cvs.rochester.edu
