Trenton, NJ 1. What [printer] do you have and why do you like/hate it? I have an Epson EX-1000. It's top resolution is 72H x 216V DPI, I believe. I've been spoiled by some of the EXPENSIVE color printers for which I was writing Sun raster-printing at my previous job, so now I would like higher dot density. But at the time (2 or 3 years ago), the price was right. It didn't really have much competition, anyway. The 24-pin printers were a relatively-new concept then. It's only a 9-pin printer, and I suspect the 24-pin printers now give faster/denser printouts. At high density, it's not real fast, but that's less of a problem with multitasking/spooling. The NLQ is good, but it won't be mistaken for the quality of a daisy wheel. The 1000 is a wide-carriage (15") printer, which I also like. 2. Whats good in this price range for color? There is a user-installable option that gives you color output on the EX-800/1000. (Sort of a ribbon tilter to select the colors.) The output is typical in comparison to other color impact printers. You don't need special paper, and ribbon costs are reasonable. But the colors aren't as vibrant/saturated as inkjets or thermal transfer. 3. How well is it supported by popular software? Preferences seems to support it well. And Epsons are the standard that everyone tries to support if they don't use the standard Amiga printer device. Dr. T's Copyist does some beautiful printouts with it. I'm using an A2000 with WorkBench 1.3 and the serial port is occupied by a modem.... The EX- printers have both parallel and (Mac-style) serial ports. ---Steve OKAY@TAFS.MITRE.ORG I'm joining MITRE/McLean probably on Oct 23! ------- End of Forwarded Message
