How about a simple modification of this: shift-clicking something in a drawer while while the drawer is selected has the effect of de-selecting the drawer. It's a hack, no doubt about it, but it would serve to lessen the danger of deleting or moving a whole drawer when you just meant to delete or move a few files. This has gotten me, too.
