Spend your own money, probably less than 70.00 depending on where you get the memory. If you are going to use it, then it may just be worth it. Of course, you could always use 4.0 and toss the 5.0x disks out. I think the former option would be the best. You could even put it on plastic and pay $10.00 a month for a full year. Now, wouldn't that be worth 5.0x? Or, you could tell your dept to go to h_ll, and tell them you will not work with a stone age memory-less machine.
