I have an AT on one end of my computer table and my Rainbow on the other end. I use the RX50 driver in the AT, and move data back and forth regularly. I have never found it to be a problem in any way. It gives me a lot of flexibility in running the right program on the right machine at the right time. I use the Rainbow mostly for communications in one form or another (Kermit on the Rainbow makes a beautiful intelligent terminal emulator for connecting to a VAX/VMS host) and the faster AT for work requiring speed or I*M compatibility. I also archive all of the Rainbow software on 1.2MB diskettes on the AT - this cuts down the number of disktettes I have lying around in various corners of the room. -gary- --- * Origin: Glacier Peak Rainbow, Bellevue, WA - 206/644-8431 (Opus 1:343/3) ------------------------------ Date: 10-13-89 (08:04) Subject: RE: PATCHES FOR TURBO C, From: GARY STEBBINS GT> I just finished speaking with Mike Feeley, who's offerred to GT> upload my patches to several Rainbow boards around the country. With version 2.1 I have to press the escape key umpteen times any time I want to get back from a wrong menu. Is there a short way of doing this ? Any help will be appreciated. Unless you have a good reason to specially want the Rainbow, then you're probably better off with a clone. I bought my first clone back when I realized that it cost the same to put a hard disk in my Rainbow or to buy a complete XT clone with hard disk. (The new found PC compatibility was a bonus.) Prices have changed a lot since back then, but some of the diffi with the maximizing the 'bow have not. Too bad, except for the bZZZZZT of the RX50, it is a very nice machine. I still have difficulty with CIS making money with messages from a distributio system that I voluntarily support with my private funds. This is how I feel about a one way link. Any two way links that you set up, however, I am willing to hear about. The issue is fairness. It stores the date/time in the autoexec.bat timestamp, and is quite a pleasure to use. I myself use DAT.COM, which sets the system date to its own timestamp, which can be set/updated with FDATE.COM... this can be done automatically by FIDO or OPUS, and used with the internal clock on the USR modem, totally eliminates any need to adjust the date, unless the modem loses power. Looks to me like the modem could be run from batteries, which would make the whole thing bulletproof! I do know that I have only see tildes, no reverse questi marks, and no blobs, in the EX-Reader origin line, and am still curious about why you are seeing something else. The vfossil most definitely does NOT map the character to a blob, it shows a tilde. As I said before, I am normall reading this echo on Rainbows, or a VT-220 clone, and all I see are tildes. When I am using a Rainbow, I am using both DECCOMM and VFOS-DEC. I don't recall the version numbers, but they would be the latest that have shown up here. On the other hand, the "hi-bit" characters are illegal in echo mail origin lines, so I am sure we can assume we will never see them again, rendering the entire discussion moot. +vanhorn+ --- * Origin: Horsefeathers + Burn a flag for freedom! + (Opus 1:343/30) ------------------------------
