Well, since your X server and client are probably on non-real-time systems
anyway, you've already blown the "reliably" part. :-)

    and without having to put
    in an extra delay to try to deal with network delay.

It's only a one-way trip delay, the other half falls into the delay you
have to wait for anyway, to determine if it might be a double click.
