WRT to the recent messages about using emacs on remote files:

My remote.el package might be what you want.  It is convenient and
robust.

The latest version is always available via anonymous
ftp from orville.nas.nasa.gov (currently version = 3.8).

I'll also willing to mail it to those without ftp capability.
