Message-ID: <8910171716.AA24578@LOM1.MATH.YALE.EDU> Date: 17 Oct 89 17:16:11 GMT Sender: daemon@tut.cis.ohio-state.edu Distribution: gnu Organization: GNUs Not Usenet Lines: 19 As I log into prep to ftp GNU Software, I see more and more tar files named after UNIX commands. This is consistent with the goal of producing a public domain version of UNIX. What I don't understand is the best way a site can make use of them. I'm acclimated to gcc, GNU Emacs, bison and gas. But what about the others ? Should one just take them as they appear and replace one UNIX executable after another by the corresponding GNU version ? Or is there more of an overview to keep in mind when installing them ? Finally, since there are different versions, if one installs them piecemeal, does one have to worry about compatibility and therefore constantly have to keep replacing them so that all are current ? Sorry if this sounds terribly naive. To the uninformed nothing is obvious. Please reply to me directly since I don't subscribe to this list yet. Allan Adler ara@lom1.math.yale.edu
