argle - this patch does *not* fix the problem, although it does
generate correct code & relaxes constraints on the code generator. I
misplaced my test file (had test.c & test.cc sym-linked together to make
certain g++ & gcc worked - somehow, they got unlinked).

back to the drawing boards.
