(1) We keep asking people to "please read the group for a while before you post." Let's say I'm the only user on my system using a HAL-9000, and I just found news. I subscribe to comp.sys.hal9000 and *there's NOTHING there*! How am I, Mr./Ms. News Novice, going to know that there will be something there eventually? (2) What about NNTP? My main news system is a machine I don't even have an account on! My newsreading accounts are on 3 different machines run by two different departments...and what if my newsreader doesn't even *use* .newsrc files for whatever reason?
