A sidelight on this is that the A-10 came about partly because the USAF
had been catching a lot of flak about air support and there was talk of
letting the Army do its own.  Supporting the Army has never been high on
the USAF's list of priorities, but faced with a choice of doing something
about it or losing the mission...
