The driver of the 3c523 must be able to detect a hung card (because it DOES happen, more often on faster machines, 55 being a 386SX, right?). Your driver seems to be able to detect it, but it must be able to reset the card to stay on the air. Rebooting your machine off course resets the card. A similar bug report for sunos was posted a couple of weeks ago, the people there had source to fix the unix driver (the bug is in the chips, which are also used in some VME ethernet cards). It sounds like you have an old and/or dumb driver. When I did my driver, I had an example driver from novell for the 523 to look in. It did the right thing. Try to get another driver. If you already have a new driver, the board may be flakey, causing the driver to be unable to reset the board after a hung. Then you should have the card replaced by your dealer. Hope this helps.
