Problem 1: I have a Sun-3/280 running SunOS 3.5 and gated 1.9.1.3. My subnet mask is 0xfffffc00. The Sun sends RIP updates with an IP destination address of 130.202.20.0 which is his broadcast address. According to RFC1009, I believe this is an invalid address for an IP destination. It also causes machines on the network who do not subnet to send ARPs for destination 130.202.20.0 because they think they should try to help out and forward the packets even though they are not gateways. The question is can I change the Sun's broadcast address under 3.5? I have tried to set it to 0xffffffff with no success. Problem 2: I have hosts who send a UDP packet to IP destination 130.202.23.255. I have three Suns acting as IP gateways (Sun OS 4.0 and 4.0.3) who rebroadcast the packet onto the same interface they received it on. According to RFC1009 this is not allowed. Because I have hosts on the network which do not understand subnetting, it causes a flurry of ARPs and rebroadcasts. The question is why do the Suns rebroadcast the packet onto the same network/interface they received the packet on? Thanks, Linda
