Keywords: oh ye of little fath. Message-ID: <939@callegro.UUCP> Date: 21 Oct 89 17:05:56 GMT Organization: Sun Microsystems, Research Triangle Park, NC Lines: 40 I've read a lot on this news group about the new Amiga ads, and it seems there are a lot of complaints about commodore not promoting the amiga as a serious computer, or not going into detail on some of the system features. it seems some of us ( being that most of us do work in the electronics field) forget that the average consumer who is going to fork out $$ on a computer doesn't know or care if a computer runs at 1 Mhz or 30 Mhz. if its multi-tasking or not. What they care about is glitz first (mostly) and raw performance later. If commodore was pushing for the high tech (yeck, I hate that word) market they wouldn't sell enough systems to make a growing profit and hence would stagnate. The business market is just to hard to break into. No, what will sell commodore hardware in large amounts is the "NEAT" factor ( gee look at all the neat'o things this system can do at home for you) and yes that includes game playing. Jo-bob consumer will be turned off if you go into "raw" system details on these ads. and if you tell him that this system is for the degree laden engineer geek :^) who wants a serious computer system to do flow dynamics mapping he will not even give amiga a second thought. You have to promote the system as a "FUN" computer, thats easy to use, to hook them, and reel them in with the performance in the dealers place of business. BTW. I don't have an amiga, I have an ST, and I think the new ads are great compared with what Atari has (nada). And lets face it, for now, Commodore is not competing with Apple or IBM, they are competing with Atari. If nintendo comes out with a "REAL" computer both Atari and Commodore are in BIG trouble, think about it. Also on a side note, Don't judge all us ST users on the few A**holes who are trying to start another war on "my system is better then your system" crap. Each system has its own pluses and minuses. Atari's big minus(to me) is the Tremails (sp?) and lack of multi-tasking, which is why I will NOT buy the TT. -- uucp: mcnc!rti!sunpix!steve or mcnc!rti!sunpix!allegro |Stephen McKay Matson "FRODO LIVES!!"
