My right sound channel was damaged a couple of years back and this capability was quite nice -- as the tech messed around with the machine, all he had to do was turn it on and wait a couple of seconds to find out whether or not it was fixed. (The first half of the little tune comes from the left sound channel, the 2nd from the right).
