I have the TOS 1.4 chips and the 1 page document on how to install them.
I also have a 1040STfm.  I think the ST has the TOS 1.0 in it, but it may
have 1.2.  Can anyone help me with installation?  My big question is, do
I really have to solder anything?  The installation document says three
solders have to be made.

Yes, I would rather have a dealer do it, but there aren't any around here.
