The good news is that virus vendors forgot about DS>it too! No viri in the Rainbow world as of yet! I seem to recall, back before Phil Katz came out with his file compression utilities, some diseased programs were passing themselves off as the lastest version of ARC. I can't remember what sort of damage was done, but they did affect Rainbows. As for viruses which targeted Rainbow-specific software, thanks goodness I can't think of any! George --- ------------------------------ Date: 10-28-89 (18:41) Subject: RE: OPUS AND MS-DOS V3.10 From: GEORGE THEALL While I appreciate your concern for accuracy, Van, I suggest you heed your own advice and "get it straight" before posting. From a portion of Gary's message (entered on 10-14-89) we read: "That doesn't sound good. I was planning on sending my $125 to ***GET*** the 3.10b, but if OPUS won't run, I'll save my money" (emphasis mine). Note, please, that Gary does not say he has a copy of 3.10b, pirated or otherwise. Nor does he mention that there's a bug in the software. I forwarded Gary's entire message to Jerry Miller in part because he might be losing a potential customer. That Jerry misunderstood Gary's intent is lamentable. But I suggest that it is only a misunderstanding on Jerry's part and that, if he were to read the message more thoroughly, the matter would be cleared up. I'm certainly glad, Van, that you've taken the time and trouble to set the matter straight. (Or did you have other intentions in posting your message?) VV>If you are intent on relaying messages between here and Compu$erve, and Str VV>consents (as he has,) please get it straight. Gary had no bug report, Fran VV>Mallory did. Perhaps you would be so kind as to POINT OUT EXACTLY WHAT IS WRONG here. Indeed, I CHALLENGE YOU to specify which of my previous messages even mention the words "bug" or "bug report" in the context of MS-DOS v3.10b and/or Gary Stebbins. Is it in one of my messages posted here? Or in my correspondence with Jerry Miller? I think you owe us an explanation, Van. Either that, or an apology. Other than that it's just another ho-hum menu There's at least one other benefit, as I understand it: you will be notified that you have VAXmail or other messages, even when you are working on the Rainbow. I see it as mostly of benefit to unsophisticated users, of which we have a few here. --- * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Maryland - 301-622-2247 (Opus 1:109/1 ------------------------------ Date: 10-27-89 (09:50) Subject: RE: HARD DRIVES AND DOS 3 From: FRANK MALLORY You should first buy a copy of Rainbow MS-DOS 3.10 from Suitable Solutions, Inc. Then use the WUTIL program to format and set up partition(s) on your ST-225. The beta test version of the GWBASIC compiler for the Rainbow is availble on this board (downloads only). The compiler is GWB.ZIP, and it's documentati is GWBDOC.ZIP. --- * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Maryland - 301-622-2247 (Opus 1:109/1 ------------------------------ Date: 10-27-89 (10:10) Subject: RE: DREADED VIRUSES -- OR From: FRANK MALLORY > Everyone complains about the Rainbow being a 'forgotten' > machine when it comes to software vendors. I recommend the use of FLU_SHOT as a minimum; also, running VIRUSCAN (latest version: SCANV45.ZIP) after each new software installation. --- * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Maryland - 301-622-2247 (Opus 1:109/1 ------------------------------ Date: 10-27-89 (10:16) Subject: RE: OPUS AND MS-DOS V3.10 From: FRANK MALLORY > > And Jerry wishes that Frank would call or write with whatever > problem there is. The only problem occurs at the end of RENUM, when the system stops with a "can't find COMMAND.C message. Since I keep COMMAND.COM in memory using COMSPEC and SETRAM, this probably indicates the RAM occupied by COMMAND.COM is being overwritten by something in RENUM. So I have started renumbering as an off-line operation and restarting manually; no big deal. And yes, I am a registered owner of 3.10b (also SpeedCache, Code Blue, and an I-Drive from SS). --- * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Maryland - 301-622-2247 (Opus 1:109/1 ------------------------------ Date: 10-20-89 (08:11) Subject: RE: LA50 SWITCH SETTINGS From: RON KRITZMAN I use my LA-50 on my other machine (AKA "Bozo the Clone") quite nicely. You will need to close sw1 position 6 to enable "ready/busy" handshaking, and you may need to close sw1 position (as I did) to invert the ready/busy signal if it doesn't play. --- * Origin: Chicago's BIT WIZ Opus HST (AlterNet 445/689) (Opus 1:115/689) ------------------------------ Date: 10-26-89 (19:59) Subject: RE: RE: DEC RAINBOW DISK From: VAN VANHORN I stand corrected (twice, yet!) re: Uniform and RX-50 disks. Regarding upper case, yes, there are some systems that are case sensitive, but as far as I am aware that is pretty much limited to unix, where upper case is normally not recognized. I haven't run into a case where I needed upper case in several years.
