Recently I installed ATM, and found some interesting behavior in Courier family. First, all the images of "smart open quote" (code $d4) in bitmap font go from up-left to down-right, but ATM-generated image go from down-left to up-right. They look like: bitmap font ATM-generated image ***** *** **** *** *** *** ** **** When I print the document at my house, all quotes go from down-left to up-right (ATM-generated image) even if I install double-size bitmaps. Next, at my office, when I try to print the document from a Mac II, which is directly connected to the LaserWriter Plus, it uses built-in font and the quotes go from down-left to up-right, just like the image in the bitmap fonts. To my surprise, when I capture the PostScript output by cmd-F and send it to LaserWriter via UNIX, plain Courier has up-left to down-right quotes, and all variations of Courier font (Bold, Oblique, and Bold-Oblique) have down-left to up-right quotes. Looking carefully, I noticed that the typefaces themselves are slightly different from built-in version, with square ends instead of round ends at each stroke. I think Adobe used different version of Courier font in ATM than they used in building bitmaps or LaserWriter Plus. If it is a matter of taste, I prefer going from up-left to down-right (bitmap style). But the real problem is how we can maintain WYSIWYG using ATM?
