I just noticed a misleading ambiguity in my posting:

The placement suggested that this was possible after the crash.  What I meant
was: "In normal operation, oddly enough, one can check the little circle
next to the word 'color' on the control panel even though the black&white
option in chosen in the number-of-colors menu.  Doing so, however, seems to
have no effect at all; I did try it both ways and Hypercard crashed both ways."
