In the case of AppleShare volume icons, these are obtained over the net by a call to AFPGetSrvrInfo (Inside AppleTalk page 13-95), in the case of hard disks the icon is obtained by a driver control call (Mac Technote #28). The icons may not be stored as ICON resources, which may be why they prove hard to find.
