My understanding was that the only important difference between the 330 and the 370, on which Sun supports the SMD-4, was the number of expansion slots. Since I have no experience with SPARC machines, I'm a little hesitant about putting together a system configuration that Sun claims they don't support unless I have strong evidence indicating things will work. Unfortunately, we need the superior performance of the SMD configuration, but can't effort a SPARCstation 370. I would be interested in the experiences of anyone who actually has an SMD-4 plugged into a SPARCstation 330. In addition, I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who can provide a comparison of SCSI/SMD disk performance on the 330.
