One possibility is that the transmission includes the "escape" sequence for
a smartmodem.  Hayes types are generally set for 3 plus characters (I won't
include them literally because somehow, somewhere it will cause someone's
line to drop...).  A certain amount of idle time is required to preceed the
sequence, but that can always happen by accident under unix.
