The functionality of the i387 was improved and integrated into the i486. Some improved functionality resulted from a tighter integration of the FPU into the processor. (How faults and exceptions are handled.) Floating point performance was improved 3-4X compared to a i387 due to reduced number of cycles for some operations. Disclamer: I DO work for Intel. I had nothing to do w/ the i486.
