You do need a "special" transformer, in the sense that a 50Hz transformer is not the "usual" one you can pick up in the US; it's typically a special-order item. A 50Hhz transformer is the normal one in Europe. A 60Hz transformer could melt down when operated at capacity with a 50Hhz supply.
