Is there something else that I need to do? In the kernel file /sys/`arch`/`systemname`/pty.h, change the definition of NPTY to what you really want it to be. If it looks ok, make sure you have all the pty devices created, but it sounds loke you have probably done that. I would be interested in knowing what you fid out if this doesn't fix it.
