Gee, I also wrote a new version of write just last week.  It also does
the least-idle-time hack.  I guess I'll post it too, once it's ready.

By the way, the very first Unix program I wrote was a filter that, when
used as "cbc | write", made write operate in character-by-character mode.
This was in 1975.
