S. A. ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS Advances in biotechnology continue to provide alternatives that will have an impact on the future economic production of fuels and chemicals. This Symposium, twelfth in a series, again provides a forum for presentation of new research results and exchange of ideas in this area. The topics include supporting biological research as well as new bioconversion processing con- cepts and thermal/chemical processing of biomass. Formal technical sessions, a poster session, informal discussion groups, and time for private discussions will be arranged to encourage productive interac- tions among attendees from the academic, private, and governmental sectors. CALL FOR PAPERS We invite you to submit papers for any of the five formal sessions described in the technical program and for the poster ses- sion. The formal sessions will be held during half-day periods throughout the meeting, and the poster session will be held Thursday evening, May 10, 1990. Our schedule calls for the submission of a 150- to 200- word abstract, using the enclosed form, by December 15, 1989. Papers will be selected prior to January 15, 1990, and authors will be notified of acceptance by February 1, 1990. Because of publication requirements, it is absolutely necessary that manuscripts be available in a form suitable for submis- sion for publication no later than the time of presentation. The papers will require normal peer review before being accepted for publication in the journal TECHNICAL PROGRAM Session 1. Thermal and Chemical Proces- sing (Tuesday morning) will explore advances in thermal and/or chemical processes either for the preprocessing of biomass or for the conversion of biomass to other energy forms, fuels, or chemical feedstocks. Applied Biological Research (Tuesday afternoon) will cover advances in genetic engineering, applied microbiology, and applied biochemistry. Emerging concepts that clearly have a potential for signifi- cant impact on bioprocessing will be emphasized. (Chairwoman: Nancy W. Y. Bioengineering Research (Wed- nesday morning) will emphasize investigation of innovative unit operations such as advan- ced bioreactor or separation concepts and integration of various feedstock, conver- sion, and product recovery technologies. Biotechnology and the Solu- tion of Environmental Problems (Friday mor- ning) will examine current research in biological waste management, treatment, and detoxification, as well as the remediation of waste disposal sites and contaminated areas. Fundamental research and actual field implementations involving biotechnology solutions to pertinent environmental issues will be discussed. (Chairman: Jon R. Special Topic Discussion Groups (Wednes- day evening and Thursday afternoon) will be arranged for small groups interested in informal discussions of special topics. Two or three sessions will run concurrently. Selected participants will be asked to pro- vide brief introductory statements to focus and facilitate discussions, but papers will not be required. Afternoon tour of the Cades Cove area of the Great Smoky Moun- tains National Park. Ticket price includes transportation and a box lunch. Cades Cove is an open-air museum that preserves some of the material culture of settlers who lived there as long ago as 1819. An eleven-mile loop road follows many of the old wagon roads; along the way you see homesteads, other buildings typical of a pioneer community, and abundant wildlife. (Tickets must be purchased.) Hiking trips to be arranged at no addi- tional cost. SITE DETAILS Great Smokies Area. Gatlinburg lies in a valley 443 m above sea level at the base of the Great Smokies' third highest peak, Mt. LeConte (2020 m), and adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Early May in the mountains is usually very pleasant, with mild days and cool nights. The town itself is a resort town with interesting shops, some featuring handicrafts native to the Appalachian region. Numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty traverse the Park. Those who enjoy backpacking may want to con- sider hiking in the backcountry the weekend before or after the Symposium. In addition to the tours sponsored by the Symposium, commercial tours of Gatlin- burg and the surrounding areas are availa- ble. Assistance in arranging for these com- mercial tours can be obtained at the River- side Motor Lodge. Lodging. Reservations for lodging should be made directly with the Riverside Motor Lodge. For your convenience, a form for this purpose is provided herein. A special Sympo- sium room rate is being offered; should the number of attendees exceed the capacity of the Riverside, convenient alternate lodging will be arranged at the same price. A depo- sit of one day's lodging will be required for arrival times after 6:00 PM. Rooms should be reserved early to ensure your stay at the meeting site. Transportation. Air travel reservations should be made to Knoxville, Tennessee. The current limousine rate from the Knoxville airport to Gatlinburg is $49.50 per person (one-way). Rental cars are available at the airport. A Travel Officer will be at the Symposium registration desk to assist with return trip reservations. REGISTRATION Advance Registration. This series of symposia has proved very popular, and since there is a facility-imposed restriction of about 250 persons, advance registration is requested. To register in advance, complete the form provided herein, and mail your check made payable to Twelfth Symposium on Biotechnology. The Symposium registration fee of $230.00/$250.00 includes admission to all technical sessions, receptions, refresh- ment breaks, the Tuesday evening banquet, the Wednesday luncheon buffet, and a copy of the Proceedings. The registration fee for full-time students or for a single day's attendance exclusive of special events is $130.00 (or $140.00 if payment is received after April 13, 1990).
