[Witty statement to be named later.]" Thanks for all the suggested solutions to my problem. It turns out that I had a bad hard drive. Still, I did try all of the solutions while waiting for my new drive :-). One item that seems to be important, but did not arise in any of the replies I received, is the status of the hard drive lamp. IT seems that a dimly lit (flashing) lamp indicates a different problem than a lamp that remains brightly lit (This according to Microbotics). Hope this little addition to the knowledge base may help someone else.
