I have seen a Howard W. Sams Computerfacts service manual for the 1541
in a couple of hi-tech book stores as well as in city public libraries
around Silicon Valley.  If you don't have similar luck locally, maybe
a book store could order or a library could do an inter-library loan
for you.  A cursory look at the manual gave me the impression that it
was pretty serious and thorough.  Good luck.
