The second poster's answer is alluding to the use of the share(2) system call - indeed there is no built in limit to the use of shared memory. But, the first poster's question is apparently asking about the sysV compatible shmop(2) routines. This limit is built into the system configuration program, sysparam(8), and there is no particular reason for its (the limit's) existence.
